United Studio Technologies UT Twin87 is a large-diaphragm condenser studio microphone with 2 operating modes Vintage and Modern, an attenuator, and a high-pass filter.

UT Twin87 captures the essence of both the original classic and modern interpretations of the Neumann u87-style microphone. UT Twin87 features a proprietary output transformer with a large core, custom-made in the USA, and a custom-made dual diaphragm with 24-karat gold sputtering.

UT Twin87 offers authentic sound capabilities of early and late 87-style Neumann microphones in one body. UT Twin87 combines carefully measured values and types of components, as well as differences in circuits between "golden standard" samples of the very first 87 microphones and some of the final versions released. No simple "equalizer/amplifier" circuit or digital trickery will help—UT Twin87 literally switches between two discrete 87-style circuit topologies.

In Vintage mode, it polarizes its capsule directly with phantom power voltage, utilizing the advantages of an isolated capsule construction with a dual back membrane—just like the earliest 87 microphones did. The same components as in the original are used in the circuits. This gives a warm and soft sound.

In Modern mode, the capsule is polarized at a higher voltage using a field-effect transistor generator circuit, as in later versions of the classic microphone, providing a higher capsule sensitivity and delivering a hotter signal to the amplifier circuit. The same components as in later 87 microphone designs are also used in its circuit. This provides a louder, slightly brighter, and clearer response, with an extended upper range and a "straight" character.
