LAZER measures the time it takes a laser beam to bounce off a hand, rather than relying on an electromagnetic field like a classic theremin, so it behaves consistently across most lighting conditions and needs no calibration to a specific body or room. Range extends to 50cm with roughly 1mm resolution, and the whole unit fits into a small, machined aluminum case powered from a USB port.
Contactless expression without a wearable to strap on
Unlike gesture controllers that need gloves, wrist sensors, or a motion-tracking camera, LAZER works with a bare hand and starts responding the moment USB power is connected — no computer, no pairing app, no calibration before every set. An OLED display with buttons lets you assign the measured distance directly to any MIDI CC, pitch bend, note, or sequence tempo, with a soft quantization option when a repeatable gesture matters more than continuous smoothness. Because the unit runs fully standalone, it holds up on stages where a laptop would be impractical or too fragile a dependency.
One gesture, the whole rig: MIDI, CV, and audio at once
The same hand movement reaches a classic 5-pin MIDI DIN output (via the included adapter), a USB port, CV and Gate outputs for a modular rig, and a built-in audio oscillator whose pitch tracks the distance — usable as a headphone signal for live tracking or as a standalone sound source. That means one gesture drives a DAW's software synth, a hardware analog synth, and a Eurorack module simultaneously, without switching between separate controllers for each of those worlds. Ten presets — five factory examples and five user-defined — switch a whole configuration between songs in an instant, and several LAZER units can run at once without interfering with each other.
