Shure Beta 58A — a supercardioid dynamic vocal microphone built for close-up live sound reinforcement and studio work.

The Beta 58A has stayed a live-sound standard for decades thanks to its neodymium magnet, vocal-tailored frequency shaping, and a supercardioid pattern that holds steady across the whole range. A 50 Hz–16,000 Hz frequency response with two presence peaks — at 4 kHz and 10 kHz — gives a signal that cuts through a live mix without needing extra EQ. Rugged construction with a hardened steel mesh grille and a pneumatic shock-mount system makes it durable enough for daily use on the road.

A stable supercardioid pattern as a defense against feedback

The main challenge on loud stages with monitor wedges is keeping enough gain before feedback without sacrificing vocal quality. The Beta 58A maintains a uniform supercardioid pattern across its entire frequency range, with rejection at 120 degrees off-axis, giving real headroom on monitor levels before feedback sets in. Unlike mics whose polar pattern shifts shape with frequency, the rear and sides here are rejected consistently across the band, so an FOH engineer doesn't need to compensate for an unstable pattern mid-mix.

Proximity effect control without losing vocal warmth

Vocalists singing right up against the grille often fight excessive low-end buildup from proximity effect. The Beta 58A has a built-in, gentle low-frequency roll-off below 500 Hz that compensates for this without stripping natural warmth when the mic is worked at a greater distance. The neodymium magnet increases sensitivity and output level compared to AlNiCo-based designs, giving a cleaner signal at the console input before any processing is applied.
