The hand-crafted, gold-sputtered diaphragm — around 3 microns thick — sits on a newly designed backplate, giving a smooth 20Hz–20kHz frequency response with a gentle rise of roughly 5dB around 9kHz, typical of omni capsules and useful for compensating high-frequency loss when picking up diffuse sound. Transformerless, class-A electronics keep distortion low while preserving a high sensitivity of around 20mV/Pa.
A consistent stereo image without fixing it in the mix
On ensemble or orchestral recordings, an unmatched mic pair forces manual level and tonal correction in post. sE selects sE8 omni units in an anechoic chamber for sensitivity and frequency response, giving a symmetrical stereo image right at the recording stage — critical in ORTF, Decca Tree, or Faulkner arrays, where channel-to-channel differences show up immediately in the panorama.
Working at high SPL without raising the noise floor
Switchable -10/-20dB pads and 80/160Hz low-cut filters let the mic sit close to loud sources (drums, brass) or work as an ambience mic without pushing up self-noise. A maximum SPL of 161dB with full attenuation, combined with dynamic range up to 146dB, gives headroom rarely found in omni capsules at this price point.
