PMC 8-2 — Active Three-Way Midfield Studio Monitor

Three drivers, four amplifiers, 1600 W per monitor, a 3-metre ATL, and bass down to 25 Hz without a subwoofer. The PMC 8-2 is the largest monitor in PMC's current active range — built for large control rooms, orchestral scoring sessions, and mastering suites where demands on dynamics and spatial resolution leave no room for compromise.

Overview

Working on nearfield monitors through large sessions has a ceiling. As material complexity grows — dense arrangements, wide stereo fields, demanding low-end content — headroom, dynamics, and physical bass volume become the limiting factor. The PMC 8-2 removes that ceiling.

Twin 8-inch drivers with 20 mm excursion, a PMC55 soft-dome midrange in an N-compass waveguide, and a 27 mm tweeter. Every driver powered by its own 400 W Class-D amplifier. Bass starts at 25 Hz — no subwoofer required — with the same control and neutrality PMC builds into every monitor in the range. Continuous SPL of 113 dB and peak SPL of 125 dB at 1 metre.

The PMC 8-2 is architecturally identical to the PMC 6-2 — same DSP, same crossover engine, same SoundAlign interface. The difference is scale: larger drivers, a deeper ATL, and the kind of low-frequency authority that only a bigger cabinet can provide.

Key Features

  • Twin 8-inch drivers — bespoke PMC
Both LF transducers are PMC studio 8 drivers — engineered specifically to work with the 3-metre ATL and Laminair technology. 20 mm of excursion, each powered independently by a dedicated 400 W amplifier. Together they generate the dynamic reserves that a single 8-inch driver, however good, cannot reach.

  • PMC55 — midrange driver with N-compass waveguide
A 55 mm soft dome designed and manufactured by PMC. The N-compass waveguide controls horizontal and vertical dispersion, keeping the midrange wide, coherent, and free of beaming. This is the driver that defines how you hear vocals, solo instruments, and stereo depth. The same unit is used in the PMC 6-2.

  • 3-metre ATL + Laminair — the full system
The PMC 8-2 uses a 3-metre transmission line — twice the length of the PMC 6. This is directly why it reaches 25 Hz without a subwoofer. The hexagonal Laminair vents smooth airflow at the line outlet, eliminating turbulence and air noise — bass is fast, clean, and artefact-free at any level.

  • 1600 W — four channels of Class D
HF: 400 W, MF: 400 W, LF: 2 × 400 W. Each driver has its own amplifier, its own DSP path, and its own headroom reserve. At 113 dB continuous and 125 dB peak, the monitor doesn't compress — it maintains dynamic linearity at levels where other monitors begin to choke.

  • DSP + SoundAlign — full browser-based control
The same system as in the PMC 6-2 and PMC 6: built-in web server, LAN-based calibration. EQ, boundary compensation, delay, phase, user presets. Monitors can be grouped — an entire immersive system configured from one interface. Input switches between analogue XLR and digital AES3 (16/24-bit, 18–192 kHz).

PMC 8-2 XBD — A Monitor That Scales With The Room

The PMC 8-2 can be expanded with its dedicated PMC 8-2 SUB, creating a PMC 8-2 XBD system. XBD mode in the DSP combines both cabinets into a single monitor with one unified SoundAlign profile.

The result is concrete: +6 dB of low-frequency headroom over the standalone PMC 8-2. The 8-inch drivers in the monitor are relieved of the lowest frequencies — the midrange clears up, dynamics increase. The system becomes a credible alternative to large main monitors in mastering, scoring, and post-production environments. Dedicated floor stands, available separately, position the PMC 8-2 XBD on the correct listening axis without mounting compromise.
