Microtech Gefell MT 71S Black Matt is an active large-diaphragm condenser microphone with a switchable polar pattern, built around Georg Neumann's original M7 capsule with a PVC membrane — in a black matt finish that visually distinguishes it from the satin nickel and dark bronze variants. In terms of electronics, capsule, and technical parameters, the MT 71S Black Matt is identical to the other finish variants: M7 capsule with PVC membrane (the same technology as the Neumann U47, U48, M49), transformerless discrete FET amplifier, a three-position polar pattern switch (cardioid, figure-eight, omnidirectional) on the rear of the housing, sensitivity of 22 mV/Pa, self-noise of 12 dBA, and maximum SPL of 140 dB. Hand-built in Gefell, Germany. The black matt finish is intended for users who prefer a discreet, non-reflective aesthetic in studio and broadcast environments.

M7 capsule and three patterns — flexibility in a single instrument

The PVC membrane of the M7 capsule is technically demanding to manufacture and delivers the historically proven openness, natural high-frequency character, and three-dimensional spatial quality that defined the classic Neumann microphone sound for decades. The MT 71S is a direct extension of the UMT 70S — the same M7 capsule, the same FET electronics, the same steel mesh body with the historical Gefell aesthetic, with the addition of a three-position polar pattern switch. Cardioid: close vocals, solo instruments, rejection of surroundings. Figure-eight: M/S recording as the Mid or Side element, stereo dialogue dubbing, bidirectional interview work, Blumlein stereo. Omni: ambient, choral, and orchestral recording with natural room acoustics. The transformerless FET output delivers low self-noise while preserving the M7 capsule's character without requiring a dedicated tube power supply — direct operation from 48V phantom. Compatible with the Rycote INV 7HG MK III suspension and the P110 INV 7 pop screen, identically to the satin nickel and dark bronze variants.
