Fostex T60RPmk2CL is the closed-back variant of the T60RPmk2 — the same fourth-generation RP planar driver in a solid black walnut housing, acoustically re-tuned for sealed enclosure performance. It fills the gap in the RP lineup between the semi-open T60RPmk2 and the monitoring-focused T50RPmk4, delivering full ambient isolation and the denser, more contained sound characteristic of a closed chamber. The dual 2-pole 3.5 mm TS earcup sockets and Y-cable topology are identical to the T60RPmk2, making the optional balanced cable ET-RP4.4BL2Y a direct fit.
Closed chamber and fourth-generation RP driver — the acoustic interaction
A planar magnetic driver inside a sealed enclosure operates under different air-load conditions than in a semi-open housing. Fostex carried out separate acoustic tuning on the T60RPmk2CL — rear chamber volume, internal damping, and vent ratio — to let the fourth-generation driver, with its redesigned printed coil, increased magnet count, and optimized flux distribution, reach its performance targets within that specific geometry. The practical result is extended bass relative to the T60RPmk2, since the sealed chamber increases effective air-spring loading at low frequencies, while the inherent speed of the planar driver keeps transient performance and resolution intact. Full ambient isolation makes the T60RPmk2CL useful where the T60RPmk2 falls short — loud recording environments, tracking sessions where headphone bleed into microphones is a concern, and listening situations requiring maximum acoustic separation from the room.Black walnut housing and cable system
Solid black walnut has natural damping properties that distinguish it acoustically from harder woods like hard maple used in the T60RPmk2ai. Where maple's stiffness yields a tighter, more transparent presentation, walnut's density and grain structure absorb certain resonance modes while contributing a warmer character in the midrange — a quality that complements the closed-back format's inherently fuller low end. Natural wood grain means every unit looks different; grain, colour, and texture variations are normal and have no effect on acoustic performance. The dual 3.5 mm TS earcup sockets allow tool-free cable swaps.
