Conversion runs at 24-bit resolution across sample rates from 44.1 kHz to 192 kHz, with signal reaching the converter through Burl's proprietary BX1 input transformer and a transistor path with zero feedback and no capacitors in the chain. A six-position audiophile stepped attenuator lets you dial in input level precisely, and a high-resolution meter shows RMS and peak values simultaneously, making it easier to track signal when recording sources with varied dynamics. Digital outputs cover two AES, one S/PDIF, and Toslink, and a BNC word clock input provides two independent clock outputs with very low jitter.
The BX1 transformer as an adjustable source of saturation
The BX1 input transformer responds to signal level much like transformers in classic mic preamps - at a higher input level it introduces natural harmonic saturation, while at a lower level it stays transparent. The six-position attenuator lets you deliberately choose the transformer's operating point: from clean, transparent conversion, through subtle tonal warming, to obvious analog overdrive when that character is a desired part of the production.Dual level monitoring and low-jitter clocking
Reading RMS and peak values simultaneously on the high-resolution meter lets you judge both momentary signal peaks and average loudness without switching the meter's mode mid-session.
