Trident Series 88 Console 88-16 is a fully modular, 16-channel analog recording console with in-line architecture and eight subgroups — the same platform as the 88-24 and 88-32, sized for smaller studio rooms without any reduction in signal path capability. The discrete Class A preamp, 80C EQ, and 27 dB of headroom are identical across all Series 88 configurations; the difference is channel count only.
In-Line on 16 Channels — More Inputs Than the Name Suggests
The split/inline architecture means each of the 16 channel modules runs two independent signal paths simultaneously: the main input path (preamp + full 80C EQ) and the monitor section (Tilt EQ). At mixdown, both paths per module feed the stereo bus, effectively delivering 32 separately equalized inputs from a 16-channel frame. The Input Reverse switch swaps the input and monitor paths, routing the full four-band EQ to the monitor path without any recabling. The Meter Select switch lets the operator choose the metering point between Direct Out and Monitor Return from the channel face — a practical detail that cuts down on workflow interruptions during tracking and overdub sessions.
Serviceability and Outboard Integration
Each channel sits on an individual module with a shock-mounted motherboard on rubber standoffs. Module replacement requires one screwdriver and a few minutes; the console continues to operate with a channel removed. A dedicated switchable input bypasses the onboard preamp and routes signal directly to the EQ section, making integration of external preamps — including 500-series units — straightforward and clean. Two independent insert points per channel: one post-preamp, one in the EQ loop. Optional Lundahl input and output transformers are available on a per-channel basis. The 88-16 is built to order with a standard 3–4 week lead time; connector options at order: XLR/TRS jack or DB25/XLR.
