The 013 FET-MAC Black is a factory-matched pair of solid-state small-diaphragm condenser microphones supplied with a full set of three swappable capsule pairs - cardioid, hypercardioid, and omnidirectional - in a matte black finish. All capsules share the same S13 design with a 25mm gold-sputtered diaphragm and work with the same transistor-based body and proprietary Soyuz toroidal transformer.
One microphone pair instead of three separate kits
XY or ORTF technique calls for a cardioid pattern, a Blumlein string recording works best with figure-8 or hypercardioid, and a wide spaced pair usually wants omnidirectional capsules - in practice that often means buying several microphone pairs for different jobs. The 013 FET-MAC solves this with one body and a complete set of six capsules in the box, so an engineer switches technique by unscrewing one head and threading in another instead of reaching for a different microphone every time the source changes.
Consistent tone across every polar pattern
Switching polar pattern mid-session often means switching tonal character too, if the capsules come from different product lines - that makes it hard to keep takes sounding consistent. All three capsule types on the 013 FET-MAC are built at the same factory on the same S13 platform, so moving from cardioid to omnidirectional changes the pickup pattern without a radical shift in tonal character - detail, density, and midrange stay recognizably the same.
