Soma Laboratory Cosmos at a glance
With

Cosmos, Soma Labs introduces an excellent real-time audio looper that shines with very musical characteristics. Cosmos uses crossfades when switching effects on and off and when switching algorithms, thus avoiding audible clicks. When switching algorithms, the contents of the sound memory are transferred to the next algorithm, where they are processed in a new way. This allows effects to be switched on and off at any time during a performance and to use this as an expressive artistic technique. The reverse mode for playing back recordings further enriches the intervention possibilities. In addition to the looping function, Cosmos features an effects processor with four effect algorithms: Two Delays, Four Delays, Giant Reverb and Granular Delay, each with three variations. The transition between effects is seamless. The sound design is complemented by a less gnarly overdrive, progressively switchable highpass and lowpass filters and an attenuator/compressor combination. Smooth soundscapes are exactly what Cosmos is all about and therefore ideal for ambient and experimental music.

offers free alternative firmware that focuses on pitch shifting, working with rhythmic material or 'quad performance'. This greatly extends the functionality of the basic version and saves the purchase of an additional, even more specialised unit.
