Neumann TLM 170 R is the first Neumann microphone to feature a fully transistorized FET 100 circuit combined with a balanced transformerless output stage, ensuring extremely low self-noise and an impressive dynamic range. As part of Neumann’s “TLM” (Transformerless Microphone) series, the TLM 170 R replaces the traditional output transformer with a dedicated electronic circuit, providing excellent common-mode rejection and effective RF shielding.
On the rear panel, the microphone includes a -10 dB pad for recording high SPL sources and a low-cut filter to minimize handling and structural noise. The large diaphragm capsule provides a smooth frequency response and wide pickup angle across all polar patterns, maintaining linearity up to 10 kHz within a 110° range. This ensures natural tonal balance even in reflective rooms with diffuse sound fields.
The TLM 170 R offers five polar patterns: omnidirectional, wide cardioid, cardioid, hypercardioid, and figure-8. The sixth switch position, marked “R”, enables remote control of polar pattern selection via the Neumann N 248 power supply. The control voltage is transmitted through a standard 3-pin XLR cable — no special connection is needed. This system allows engineers to switch polar patterns remotely by varying the phantom power voltage.
Every detail of the TLM 170 R is designed for precision and reliability. The microphone features grounded capsule surfaces and membranes for full protection against static charges, atmospheric interference, and contamination. With its transformerless architecture and impeccable frequency response, it captures sound with striking accuracy, making it ideal for vocals, instruments, speech, broadcasting, film, and orchestral recording.
