KRK S12.4 – a 12" active studio subwoofer with a Kevlar/aramid composite woofer, built to extend the low end of a 2.1 monitoring setup. Adding a subwoofer to a pair of nearfield monitors often creates phase issues and an inconsistent low-frequency stereo image if the crossover isn't matched to the specific monitors in use. The S12.4 addresses that directly – a four-position crossover and a polarity switch give the engineer control over the crossover point instead of forcing a compromise dictated by the monitors' own factory settings.

Matching the crossover to any monitor pair

The four-position crossover (50/60/70/80 Hz) lets you set the split point for the specific monitors on the desk – from small 5-inch nearfields to larger 8-inch models – without an external controller. The input sensitivity switch (standard/high) and the 0°/180° polarity switch give additional tools for eliminating dips or peaks in the transition band between the sub and the mains, which matters for critical listening in a small room.

Comparing the mix with and without low end

The bypass function, triggered through an optional footswitch, mutes the subwoofer and routes full-range audio to the mains without physically switching anything off or leaving the mix position. That's a practical way to check whether the low end in a mix will translate on smaller playback systems that don't have a subwoofer – you can flip between the two perspectives instantly without breaking the session.
