FATSO offers four ready-made compression types with fixed, factory-set thresholds, attack, and release times — a deliberate design trade-off, since the unit was built to deliver analog tape character rather than replace a fully adjustable compressor like the Distressor. EL-FTC doesn't change that philosophy; it simply gives access to one variable that was previously untouchable from the front panel: the actual threshold at which the compression and saturation circuits engage.
Unlocking threshold control on a unit with factory-fixed values
EL-FTC's two large knobs — one for compression threshold, one for saturation threshold — insert level control directly into FATSO's sidechain loop. Turning gain down at that point effectively raises the threshold, so the circuit engages later with less operating distortion; turning gain up lowers the threshold, engaging sooner and deepening the saturation character. That lets FATSO be dialed in to a source far more precisely than choosing among the four factory modes from the front panel allows, without touching the unit's internal circuitry.
A non-invasive expansion without modifying the unit
The controller connects with two 1/4" cables straight into FATSO's existing rear-panel Sidechain Insert jacks — no opening the chassis, no soldering, no voiding the warranty. Because compression and saturation each get their own knob, the relationship between the two can be tuned precisely — heavy saturation with relatively light compression, or the reverse — something the fixed factory thresholds simply can't achieve on their own. The same insert jacks the EL-FTC plugs into can also be used to build frequency-dependent compression by patching an external EQ into the sidechain loop, making them a general-purpose access point rather than a function reserved solely for this controller.
KEY FEATURES
- External threshold controller for the Empirical Labs FATSO EL7X
- Two independent knobs: compression threshold and saturation threshold
- Connects via two 1/4" cables to the rear-panel Sidechain Insert jacks
- Lowering sidechain-loop gain raises the threshold (less distortion)
- Raising sidechain-loop gain lowers the threshold (more saturation/compression)
- Expands FATSO's tonal range without modifying the unit
- Same jacks alternatively enable frequency-dependent compression with an external EQ
- Plug-and-play installation, no modification to the chassis
