The MM-520 is an open-back planar magnetic monitoring headphone co-developed with 18-time Grammy-winning mix engineer Manny Marroquin over four years of studio work. It succeeds the MM-500 and introduces SLAM – Symmetric Linear Acoustic Modulator – an acoustic system that manages air pressure inside the earcup to address the most persistent weakness of open-back designs: low-end control and sub weight. The 90mm driver platform carries over from the MM-500 with Ultra-Thin Uniforce diaphragm, N50 Fluxor magnet array, and Fazor phase management intact. SLAM is an additional acoustic layer on a proven transducer, not a ground-up redesign. At 18 ohms impedance and 102 dB/mW sensitivity, the MM-520 runs directly from an audio interface, console headphone output, or laptop without a dedicated amplifier.
Translation as the design standard
Studio headphones are judged on one thing: whether the mix holds up everywhere else. The MM-520 was built around that question. Midrange neutrality is the foundation – kick and bass need to lock without bloating, vocals need to sit correctly, reverb and delay tails need to be readable and placeable. SLAM adds deeper and firmer low-end extension that typically falls short in open-back designs, where pressure equalization bleeds bass energy. The result is a reference tool where decisions made during mixing carry across playback systems more consistently – fewer corrections needed when moving from headphones to monitors, consumer earbuds, or a car stereo.
Hardware built for long sessions
Memory foam earpads attach magnetically, making replacement or cleaning a tool-free process. At 555 g the MM-520 sits at the heavier end of the planar magnetic monitoring category – relevant for sessions running multiple hours. The package includes a 2.5 m cable, 3.5 mm to 6.3 mm adapter, travel case, and soft carry bag. THD below 0.1% at 100 dB SPL and a frequency response extending to 5 Hz and 50 kHz place the MM-520 in measurement-grade reference territory. Maximum SPL above 130 dB provides headroom for tracking loud sources without driver limiting. Priced at $1,699, it occupies the top position in Audeze's Marroquin lineup, above the MM-500 and the more accessible MM-100.
