Frap Tools Magnolia – 8-voice analog FM synth with West Coast soul

Frap Tools Magnolia – 8-voice analog FM synth with West Coast soul

This is the first keyboard synthesizer from the Italian manufacturer known for their modular “West Coast” style designs – and it both looks and sounds spectacular!

West Coast synthesis in a keyboard format

Magnolia is an 8-voice analog polyphonic synthesizer featuring through-zero frequency modulation (TZFM). Frap Tools’ goal was to bring expressive, experimental West Coast sonic character into a more traditional keyboard environment – and by the looks (and sounds) of it, they’ve succeeded.

Through-zero FM is a technique more familiar in modular systems and rarely seen in keyboard synthesizers. It allows modulation to pass through 0 Hz, producing rich and dynamic timbres. Magnolia also features wavefolding, flip sync, and filter frequency modulation.

Interface and design

Magnolia’s front panel evokes comparisons to the Alesis Ion and ARP classics: machined aluminum knobs, sliders, tons of LEDs, and a four-character screen – hinting at a menu-free operation. This is an instrument clearly built for the stage and hands-on control.

Availability and what’s next

Two prototypes will be showcased at Superbooth 25, with an official launch scheduled for summer 2025.
