Say „elysia" and you think pure Class A and the distinctive glassy button of the Alpha Compressor sitting on more than one mastering engineer's desk. The company was founded in 2005 in Nettetal, Germany, by Ruben Tilgner and Dominik Klaßen — who'd actually met years earlier, playing together in a fairly wild electronic session-music project performed live exclusively in 5.1 surround (just setting up the gear for a show took forever). After rehearsals, the two would regularly head to the same pub for a beer and talk audio gear — and that's where the idea of starting a company together was born. The direct trigger was a bass preamp Dominik asked Ruben to build for himself, which never actually got made — but the circuit ideas Ruben developed while working on it became the foundation of what would become elysia's first product: the now-legendary Alpha compressor.

Tilgner wasn't a newcomer, either — a decade earlier, in 1996, working for SPL, he invented the revolutionary Transient Designer technology (his own first compressor was called DynaMaxx, and the challenge was fitting all its functionality under a single knob). That „fewer knobs, more character" philosophy carried over into elysia: the flagship Alpha Compressor offers switchable feed-forward and feedback modes (each giving a distinct compression character), a tilt EQ filter, and a soft-clip limiter, while the five-band Museq equalizer uses unique bandpass filters that generate harmonics rather than suppress them. Everything is designed, assembled, and tested in a single facility in Nettetal, using fully discrete Class-A circuitry.
